You may experience some discomfort or slight pain at the point of needle insertion, however acupuncture is generally not painful. The most common sensations felt are feelings of heaviness, numbness or a warm sensation around the needle.
As with any medical office visit, there will be both a physical exam and oral intake during each treatment. During the oral portion of the intake, you will be asked questions about you chief complaint, as well as questions about your general state of health. During the physical exam, your pulse will be taken, your tongue will be examined and other tests may be performed, such as range of motion, muscle testing, etc.
The initial visit takes about 2 hours. This will include time for you to fill out paperwork, provide a detailed medical history, including a history of any present illnesses, and receive your first acupuncture treatment. We will also discuss a treatment plan and answered any questions you may have.
Subsequent visits will last about 50 minutes.
Wearing loose fitting clothing is recommended. Many acupuncture points are located around the knee and elbow. By wearing loose fitting clothing, you reduce the need to partially disrobe for treatment.
