About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a medical system that has been used to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness for over 2000 years. In fact, acupuncture is the oldest continuously practiced form of medicine in the world. Acupuncture uses the insertion of extremely fine needles into specific points in the body to treat acute or chronic ailments, relieve pain, lower stress levels, assist in recuperation, and boost the immune system.

Acupuncture is based on balancing yin and yang. Imbalance leads to blockage of Qi within the body and along pathways called meridians. There are 14 such meridians with more than 350 points along each.

You can interpret acupuncture from a Western perspective by saying that acupuncture affects the regulatory functions of the nervous system. Studies have proven that acupuncture has an influence on the body’s levels of pain-killing biochemicals, immune system cells, neurohomormones, and have been shown to influence the autonomic nervous system.
